Tattoos are created by inserting colored materials underneath the surface of the skin.

The word tattoo is said to have come from the Polynesian word ‘TA’ which means striking something, and the Tahitian word ‘TATAU’ which means ‘to mark something’. In recorded history, the earliest tattoos can be found in Egypt during the time of the construction of the great pyramids and when the Egyptians expanded their empire, the art of tattooing spread as well. The civilizations of Crete, Greece, Persia, and Arabia picked up and expanded the art form. Around 2000 BC tattooing spread to China.

The Greeks used tattooing for communication among spies. Romans marked criminals and slaves, and this practice is still carried on today. The Ainu people of western Asia used tattooing to show social status, and are noted for introducing tattoos to Japan where it developed into a religious and ceremonial rite. Polynesians developed tattoos to mark tribal communities, families, and rank. They brought their art to New Zealand and developed a facial style of tattooing called Moko which is still being used today.

In the west, early Britons used tattoos in ceremonies, and the Danes, Norse, and Saxons tattooed family crests. It thrived in Britain until the Norman Invasion of 1066, but it disappeared from Western culture from the 12th to the 16th centuries. While tattooing diminished in the west it thrived in Japan. In time, the Japanese escalated the tattoo to an aesthetic art form.

William Dampher is responsible for re-introducing tattoo art to the west. A sailor who traveled the South Seas, in 1691 he brought to London a heavily tattooed Polynesian named Prince Giolo, who became the rage of London. Soon, the upper- class were getting small tattoos in discreet places. For a short time tattooing became a fad.

In 1891, Samuel O’Riely patented the first electric tattooing machine. It was based on Edison’s electric pen, which punctured paper with a needle point. The basic design with moving coils, a tube and a needle bar, are the components of today’s tattoo gun. The electric tattoo machine allowed anyone to obtain a reasonably priced, and readily available tattoo. As the average person could easily get a tattoo, the upper classes turned away from it. By the turn of the century, tattooing had lost a great deal of credibility. Tattooists worked the sleazier sections of town. Heavily tattooed people travelled with circuses and “Freak Shows”.

The birthplace of the American style tattoo was Chatham Square in New York City. At the turn of the century it was a seaport and entertainment centre attracting working-class people with money. Lew Alberts had trained as a wallpaper designer and he transferred those skills to the design of tattoos. He is noted for redesigning a large portion of early tattoo flash art. With World War I, the flash art images changed to those of bravery and wartime icons. In the 1920s, tattooists opened shops in cities with military bases close by, particularly naval bases. Tattoos were known as travel markers. You could tell where a person had been by their tattoos.

In the late 1960s, the attitude towards tattooing changed. Much credit can be given to Lyle Tuttle, who tattooed celebrities, particularly women. Magazines and television went to Lyle to get information about this ancient art form. Today, tattooing is making a strong comeback, and it is more popular and accepted than it has ever been. All classes of people seek the best tattoo artists. This rise in popularity has placed tattoists in the category of “fine artist”, and the tattooist has garnered a respect not seen for over 100 years.

There are numerous tattoo designs each depicting different meanings and are available in diverse shapes and colors. Therefore it is important to allow some space to your thoughts while going for tattooing since tattooing is a life long decision and beside that you want to become a proud possessor of a tattoo design that will snatch the attraction of passers-by. There is no need to rush when making such a important decision instead you do some research to make any changes or alterations to any tattoo design that you find interesting because as it has been already said that each tattoo design depicts different meanings and the design you will be wearing will display your expression and may have ill effect if not selected judiciously.

It is recommended to talk to your tattoo artist to get their expert view on tattoo placement since tattooing needs considerable thoughts and calculation. Among the various tattoo artwork designs, Abstraction tattoo that follow the expression of ancient tattooing for instance be ancestral, primitive or clan type symbols and are normally done in black and white ink. Naturalistic tattoos are lifelike representations of animals, land/sea, and insects, anything in nature. Dedication tattoos are borne on service men and women, as well as those wishing to make a statement of dedication to an occasion or in honor of someone. Simplification tattoos ranges from action figures and cartoon characters to zodiac signs and flowers. Complex or combination tattoos as the name suggests present themselves as body suits of art work or colorful jumbled puzzle pieces.

Tattoos are a common thing these days. They are more popular than ever before. Research has shown that nearly one in four people have at least one tattoo. There are many designs to choose from, giving people a chance to be creative.
Tribal tattoos are among the most popular designs. They have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years and they are always evolving and becoming more and more complex with their designs and styles. Tribal tattoos can either be the traditional black style that cover the arms and the legs or the more colorful styles that can cover every area of the body. The colorful, more modern look is becoming more and more popular when compared to other styles.

The “old school” styles of tattoos are also popular. Anchors and things like that are making a great comeback these days and not just with sailors. These styles were very common and very popular back in the sixties. They are rapidly gaining their popularity back, as men and women are getting anchors and swallow designs tattooed on them more and more.

Lower back tattoos are the most common for women. The lower back is one of the most sexual and sensual areas on a female, making the ideal spot for a tattoo. Tribal designs are the most popular, although flowers, dragons, and other symbols make great tattoos as well. The lower back offers plenty of natural curves as well, which can make for an innovative tattoo. Often times, women tend to include tribal that spreads, covering the base of their hips as well. A lower back tattoo also provides a good starting point from which to expand on a tattoo. If properly designed with this in mind you can extend down across the hips and up the back to create a single flowing tattoo which covers the entire back from where you can then develop across the shoulders and arms if desired.

Dragon designs are another popular style of tattoos. They were popular in the past, and are now starting to get their popularity back. There are a lot of different dragons to choose from, including the mythical dragon and ancient Chinese dragon. Dragons are great on the chest for males and the back for females. Dragon tattoos can be virtually any size, although most males tend to have them cover one side of their chest or the upper region of their arms. Dragons because of their lizard like heritage also lend themselves well to curves around natural muscle and body shape and large dragon tattoos can spread the entire back and chest if designed properly.

Celtic tattoos are also popular as well. They are mostly seen with those who have a Celtic heritage, although some with no Celtic heritage have them as well. They offer a variety of symbols and designs, providing universal meanings for everyone. Often times they are mixed with tribal tattoos to create a more innovative tattoo. The meanings of Celtic symbols can be found at target tattoo and also some various discussions on thetattooforum.com
There are many other types of tattoos out there, although the above are the most common. Tattoos can be very creative and innovative; it all depends on what you want. If you’re looking to stand out and be truly creative – you can always have a professional tattoo artist design one for you.

If you’re thinking of getting a tattoo, chances are you’re looking for that perfect tattoo design. Choosing a tattoo design can be time-consuming, not least because getting inked is a major step, and you obviously need to find a design that you can live with for the rest of your life. So it makes sense to take your time and check out as many designs as possible before you make your decision.

So, where do you look for great tattoo designs? You can visit your local tattoo parlours, which will have a selection of tattoo artwork on the walls, as well as books of designs that you can look through. The problem with this approach is that you’ll only have a limited selection of designs to choose from, depending on what’s available at the shops you visit. You’re also more likely to end up getting the same design as someone else, which may not be something you want.

As an alternative, you can look on the internet for tattoo designs. There are millions of designs scattered around the web, so you won’t go short of ideas here! There is a downside though, in that many of the online tattoo galleries have poor quality designs and/or poor quality images, so you may have to wade through some garbage to find the really good artwork.

However, there are a number of very high quality sites that offer high resolution, professionally designed tattoo artwork, and the best of these allow you to download the designs and print them off. This obviously makes it easy to take your design to the tattoo artist, and gives him or her a high quality picture from which to work.

The sites which offer excellent quality printable tattoo designs are sometimes free to access, but in many cases you’ll find that free tattoo design sites carry a lot of substandard work. If you want to save time and find the best printable designs quickly and easily, you might consider joining one of the tattoo membership sites, where for a small fee you can gain access to their archives of top notch designs. Most reputable sites only charge a one-off fee for lifetime access to the site’s updates, and all will offer a money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied.

You might also like to visit TattooMeNow, which is in my opinion the best of the tattoo design membership sites, as it offers not only thousands of outstanding professional designs, but there is also a vibrant online community of fellow tattoo enthusiasts, plus tattoo-related videos and other interesting resources.

A lot of people like the way tattoos appear on others and want one for themselves, but have no idea what they would like. It’s a very big decision; chances are, this is something you’ll have to live with for the rest of your living days.

So how do you find “the one”?

Quite often these days, more and more people are referring to the internet to find their tattoo ideas.

Recently, this has allowed more choices of tattoos that are unique to an individual.

Another place people can find tattoo ideas are the tattoo artists’ design books, usually found lying around their studio or hanging on the studio walls. Unfortunately, a lot of tattoo artists don’t update their collections often, which leads to the same design getting tattooed on many people over and over again.

So how do you ensure that you have a one-of-a-kind tattoo no one else has?

Getting a tattoo pack is one way to go about this. These packs come stuffed with dozens of completely original tattoo designs, but you do have to pay for them (though it is usually nominal). The great thing about tattoo packs is that they are guaranteed to be completely unique and original. Chances are, you won’t find many of the designs within the pack anywhere else, making your tattoo truly special. Tattoo packs are easy to pick out of, as they are organized with themes that appeal to different people.

For those who are truly imaginative, you can make an effort to sit down and design your own tattoo, try to come up with things that mean something to you;something that you feel like you’ll never regret.

A great idea is to explore your family’s history and put themes from your heritage into your design. If you are of Germanic heritage, for instance, you could try some Teutonic symbols or the like.

For people of Celtic heritage, Celtic designs are very popular for people of any descent these days, and are therefore easy to find. It’s also brilliant if you design your own tattoo; tattoo artists are more than happy to look at the design you created sitting at your desk and transfer it to your skin.

At the end of the day, the best way to come up with a tattoo idea is to search inside yourself. Don’t draw on things that could change suddenly (jobs, boy/girlfriends, cars, etc), find something that is a part of your very being and try to come up with something related to this.

A design related to your family heritage is great, for example, because your heritage will never change; it is a part of every molecule in your body.

If you can come up with something along these lines, you should have no trouble coming up with tattoo designs that you will be happy with for the rest of your life.

Tattoos come in all shapes and sizes, styles and colors but can still be generally categorized into one of the major styling groups. With the proper artist achieving any style should not be an issue. Better yet you could even choose an artist who specializes in that style and end up with an even better looking tattoo. Though most artists can do anything, some of the major styles will look much better with more advanced techniques of shading and such if you choose a specialized artist. So lets cover the basic styles of tattoos to better help you choose a design and from there an artist.

Bio-mechanical

These are often somewhat Gothic in design and are a result of the works of HR Giger, the creator of the Aliens creatures in the same named movie. These tattoos typically have a fleshed creature who is somewhat composed of mechanical parts. Another sub-niche of this involves the flesh being drawn in a more mechanical style, without the actual mechanical parts.

Black and Grey

This is one of the styles that it will really help to find an artist who specializes in it as it requires advanced shading techniques for the tattoo to come out looking just right. Black and grey simply refers to the only colours that are used in a tattoo of this style.

Celtic

This style is rooted in Celtic history and is typically comprised of what is referred to as Celtic Knots, the designs are intricate and typically done in all black ink. As this is a difficult design to do, again it is best left for an artist in this speciality.

Oriental

This are big bold colourful pieces that originated in 18th century Japan based on Ukiyo-e wooden blocks. These typically include oriental figures such as coy fish, dragons etc.

Portrait

These are as the name suggests portraits of people. This is typically done by taking a photograph and creating a tattoo from it. These are usually done in black and grey and as a result are best done by someone who either specializes in black and grey or someone who specializes in portraits as it can be very difficult to capture the true nature of a person in ink.

Tribal

This is a very common style of tattoo and is made up of bold simple lines and or patterns. Again these are typically done in black and depending on the degree of difficulty to the design chosen you may need to find an artist whose style is specifically tribal.

No matter the style you decide upon you can ensure the best possible tattoo by finding a specialized artist who can create a true masterpiece work of art in your tattoo design. A little research can go a long way to ensure you truly enjoy your tattoo.

Part of the time spent deciding on your tattoo design should also be spent on deciding the placement of your tattoo. Depending on where you place it, the very same design can hold very different meanings, some places will exhibit innocence well others portray sexuality or sensuality. Where you place it is of course, ultimately up to you.

A portion of your decision also needs to account for whether or not you can conceal the tattoo. Some professions do not require the look of professionalism while others do. A lawyer with letters across his knuckle will not come across as well as the lawyer whose tattoo is easily covered by his suit. There are places where tattoos are appropriate and where they are not. Remember though, it is there for life, you may not always be in a profession that finds exhibiting them acceptable. If you are young, your best choice is one you can conceal, so that down the road you don’t lose that dream career because of a choice you may in your teenage years.

Placement is often easier for men then women, as more of a male body is commonly covered. Female wear dresses and skirts and spaghetti strap tops. Some of the places a male could commonly hide and conceal his tattoo aren’t so much of an option for a female. Men can get a tattoo on their leg that won’t be seen in a business setting but for the same placement on the female body it may be quite visitable in her suit skirts.

You need to also take into account how your body will age and grow. For males again, it isn’t as much an issue but for the female, child birthing and ageing can have quite the dramatic effects on your skin and your tattoo as a result. Sure the tattoo looks great across your breast now, but after a child and the stretching it may end up deformed and no longer something you want adorning your body.

Placement is key in deciding on your tattoo. Sure you need to keep in mind the way the design works with your body, the significance and the colouring but you also need to remember that this tattoo is there for life and your body changes over your lifetime, as does your personality and personal sense of style. Don’t pick the in thing, because 5 years down the road you may regret it. Careful consideration and deliberation will leave you with a tattoo that you are happy with for life.

Tattoos are a common thing these days. They are more popular than ever before. Research has shown that nearly 1 in 4 people have at least one tattoo. There are many designs to choose from, giving people a chance to be creative.

The lower back offers plenty of natural curves as well, which can make for an innovative tattoo. Often times, women tend to include tribal that spreads, covering the base of their hips as well.

Dragon designs are another popular type style of tattoos.

They offer a variety of symbols and designs, providing universal meanings for everyone. Often times they are mixed with tribal tattoos to create a more innovative tattoo.

Tattoos are very common these days, with nearly 1 in 4 people having at least one. Tattoos represent an art form, and allow people to broadcast who they are. Even though they are popular, most people will end up regretting them. In most cases, those who regret tattoos didn’t think about their design or take the time to choose the best tattoo for them. Even though it is possible to get a tattoo removed, the process is expensive and quite painful. To prevent this from happening, you should always take some time and find the perfect tattoo – your dream design.

Instead of trying to save some money, you should never choose a studio or artist based on how cheap they are. Cheaper artists and studios normally lack in work quality, which is why they are able to charge cheaper prices. Instead, you should look for the best studio and artist that you can find close to your area. Even though it may be expensive – the quality and design will be well worth it.

For some, their dream design is a person. This can be a loved one or someone who has passed on. You can always use a design or symbol that means something to you and reminds you of them or you can always use their face. Good tattoo artists can make magical tattoos with meaning, whether it is someone’s face or a symbol that brings out meaning.

Sometimes, it can be hard picking out your dream design. If you have an idea in mind but are still not sure what you want, you can always research. You can get tattoo books, theme books, magazines, or just research online. By looking at designs you may find something similar to what you are interested in. Once you have found it, all you need to do is sit down with your tattoo artists and come up with your dream tattoo design.

If you have a basic idea for something small in mind, you can always have it tattooed then come back later and have more added on. The best thing about tattoos is the fact that they can always be added to later. This can be a great thing if you want to try a smaller tattoo first, and then decide whether or not you want to get it bigger. If you start with a fraction of your dream design, you can always finish it up later on.

Whenever you get your dream tattoo you should always take time selecting the design. Tattoos will stay with you forever, which is why you should pick them carefully. If you put the necessary time and thought into it now, you won’t regret it later. Your dream design should be very important, and hold meaning. This way, every time you look at it – you’ll be reminded of that special moment in time and you’ll never forget about it.
